IPTA, Cuttack : Balraj Sahani Birth Centenary Celebration

The Indian People’s Theatre Association, Cuttack has successfully celebrated the Birth Centenary of veteran Bollywood actor Late Sri Balraj Sahani at the prestigious Kala Vikash Kendra, Cuttack; on 14thDecember 2013.The programme has been forced to postponed twice due to the grievous Cyclone and flood that rocked Odisha. The programme was scheduled to be held on 19th Oct. 2013 and then shifted to 23rdNov. 2013 and finally on 14th Dec. 2013.

The programme started by 6 pm in the evening and continued till 9.45 pm. The hall which was well attended by women, writers, journalists, students, artiest, intellectuals, trade union people, Bank employees, teachers remembered their beloved actor and shown their tribute.


IPTA Executive member Susant Mohapatra welcomed all the Participants, volunteers, and introduced all the honorable guests to the dais. Mr. Bibhu Prasad Tarai MP, Jagatsighpur, was the Chief Guest. IPTA state President and famous Odia Cine Music director, singer and columnist Mr. Prafulla Kar was the guest of honor. Eminent Educationist and former Principal Christ College, Cuttack Mr. Dayanidhi Samantray presided over the Meeting.

Famous actress of Odia cinema, former director of Door Darshan Mrs. JHARANA DAS, was felicitated by IPTA in this program. Along with the guests President Puranja Roy and Secretary Krishnapriya Mishra formed the dais.

Mr. Prafulla Kar lit the lamp and garlanded the photo of Late Balraj Sahani.

The meeting was followed with three revolutionary songs presented by the IPTA group and directed by Rita Mukherjee/ Susant Mohapatra. Sri Laxmidhar Mahalik, Siman Rao, Miss Sradha Priyadarsini Mishra,Bina Karmakar, Ankita Mahalik and Kumari Arpita were the other participants.


In the beginning General Secretary Mrs. Krishnapriya Mishra read out the life and works of Late Sri Balraj Sahani. Chief guest Mr.Bibhuprasad Trai honored Mrs. Jharana Das by presenting a MANAPATRA, trophy and shawl. The guests spoke on the relevance of Balraj Sahni today especially the youth should follow his revolutionary path. They emphasized on the simple sober and dedicated life of Late Balraj Sahni.



Cultural programs

The Odissi Nrutya Mandalunder the guidance of Guru Ashis Dash has presented the Odissi Balle “Bande Utkal Janani” and “Tunga Sikhar Chula”.

Kumari Kasturika Rout of Railway High school who stood fist in dance competition performed theSambalpuri folk dance.



The most attractive and fabulous performance was the Gitee Natya SRIMATI SAMARJANI a play by Gopal Chhotray based on the famous short story of Byasakabi Fakir Mohan Senapati. The artists Premananda Swain, Swarnaprabha Dash, Girija Panda and Sri Biswajeet were appreciated by the audience.

Srimati Samarjani is based on the story of Fakir mohan Senapati. It is about a strong woman. She sets right her wayward zamindar husband Chandramani Babu to the surprise of the entire town. There is an attempt to bring a wine and drug addict husband to the true tract of life and morality. Sulochana Devi, the heroine of the story, has gone to the extreme and using broomstick to a drunkard husband. But her repentance, penance and profuse tears have wiped out the evil she has done to her husband. Her intention to bring a way-ward husband to the path of morality and to normal social being is noble and righteous.

Prize giving ceremony-

The prize giving ceremony was conducted by Mr. Nikunj Bhutia.

On the eve of the centenary celebration of Late Sri Balraj Sahni, various competition programmes like Fancy dress, Drawing, Song, Dance and Debate was organized by IPTA Cuttack, among school children starting from Nursery to 12th standards on 29thSeptember 2013 at Mahamaya M E School, Cuttack. 40 girls and boys belonging to 21 different educational Institutions of Cuttack took part in the competition.

The winner students who secured positions were presented a trophy of Balraj Sahni and a Certificate of Merit by IPTA in this program. The trophies and certificates were presented by Mr. Bibhu Trai and Mr. Dayanidhi Samantray. The proud parents of the participants were fascinated to see their children receive the trophies and certificates from the guests.

President Dayanidhi Samantray presented the trophies to the Odissi Nrutya Mandal and to the musical play Srimati Samarjani Group and to the volunteers. State secretary Sri Ramesh Padhi joined and presented the Trophies to the Guests.

Program Coordination-

The program was coordinated by Sri Susant Mahapatra, Nikunj Bhutia, Swarnaprabha Dash, Laxmidhar Dash, Mr. Simon, Laxmidhar Mahalik, Binod Behera, Ashok Das, ,Niharika Das, Miss. Harsha Samantray, Miss Sradha Priyadarsini Mishra, Samhati Mahapatra, Premanada Swain, Badrinarayan Mohapatra, Indira Patel, Kajal Mukherjee and Krishnapriya Mishra.

At the end IPTA executive member Sri Laxmidhar Dash thanked all the guests, participants, volunteers, Jury Members and members present at Kala Vikash Kendra.
